- Profit by product, customer and crew
- Reporting you can run the business on
- A leadership rhythm that sticks
I enjoy helping small businesses create their goals and set plans to achieve them through planning, measuring and adapting. Goals can be succession, growth, selling or as simple as wanting more clarity on certain aspects of your business.
Who I work with
Most of the owners I talk to built something real. They also can be stretched thin, exhausted or wondering what comes next.
Succession, a partial sale, or getting the business ready to sell at the right number.
Demand is there. The systems, people and capital to chase it aren't yet.
Lots of small, good operators and no economy of scale. Together they can be worth more than apart and there are ways to achieve this.
Manufacturing, dealer and distribution networks, the trades, and specialty service businesses.
How I work
Every relationship starts small. Each step earns the next one, and you can stop at any step. Once we learn an owner's goal, we lay out a simple step-by-step plan to achieve it, and bring in specialists from my network as needed.
Find out what the owner's goal is, then put a plan in place to achieve it.
Run the business like a company with systems, metrics and personnel structure to profitably achieve goals.
When it fits, I invest. That can be a buy-in, a majority deal, or joining several owners into one larger company.
What to expect
I've sold to private equity and to a public company. I've seen what good partners look like, and what bad ones cost. You'll leave with a clear plan to build value and reach your goals.
You'll hear what I see in your numbers, good and bad, before anything gets started.
The team and the name you built are part of the value. A plan always works around the team.
Clear roles, clear governance and no surprises after closing. I'll help you avoid some of the mistakes others have made when entering a transaction.
I've run crews, sold product and built the systems. I'll roll up my sleeves with you to get results.
No pitch deck needed. A phone call is usually the best first step.
About Steven
I grew up inside a family manufacturing business. My parents launched it in our garage in 1992, when I was a young teenager, and my brother and I worked right alongside them.
Out of high school I went full time on the manufacturing floor, then ran crews, then became National Sales Manager. I taught myself to program and built the ERP system that ran the company for 14 years. We grew it into a national dealer brand, bought a second manufacturer, and sold a majority stake to private equity, where I served as President.
That chapter taught me what a good partnership is worth, and what a bad one costs. It shapes how I structure every deal now.
I co-founded Grand Fiberglass Pools and sold it to Latham Group, a public company. The same year I started SP Capital to help owners professionalize, grow and get ready for a sale.
No owner needs one guy who claims to do everything. Every engagement draws on a network of professionals I've worked with and trust, brought in only when the job calls for it.
Co-founded, built and sold
From founding to sale
Built a fiberglass pool manufacturer from a standing start and sold it to Latham Group (Nasdaq: SWIM) in 2022. Achieved the associated earnout while running channel sales & marketing for the U.S. and Canada.
Grew and sold
Grew a garage startup into a national brand, added a second brand by acquisition, and led the sale of a majority stake to private equity. Served as President.
Built, integrated and sold
Started a production operation, then acquired a retail business to own the full chain from production to customer. Packaged the combined company and sold it to a private buyer.
Built the systems
Designed in house tracking systems and implemented ERP systems as the companies needs grew.
Advised
Helps owners clean up their numbers, professionalize operations and prepare for a sale, working alongside an investment bank as an operating partner.
Private equity
Worked inside a lower-middle-market private equity firm sourcing platform acquisitions. I know what buyers look for, how they value a company, and what it takes to get through due diligence without surprises.
I learned business from parents who outworked everyone. I still do.
Trust is earned in the small things, long before closing.
Build something that rewards the owners, the team and their families.
I'm always glad to talk with owners, operators and fellow investors.
